Emissions 2011

Camp Questions Mark & Irie Cartel present EMISSIONS! It’s not very often I post about events on the site but ohh man this ONE is truly worth covering. Emissions is on it’s 3rd year and wow this years line up is mind blowing. This festival is approximately two hours outside of San Francisco. There will be camping at the beautiful location for all three days.

Now lets get straight to the punch, MUSIC! The line up for this festival is one of the diverse line ups I have seen compared to all the major festivals. Diversity doesn’t mean that there’s only some medium grade level headliners mixed in with some local talent. This truly means that some of the biggest names in all spectrum’s of bass music. It is still taking me back how I will be playing at this event as well. This will be the first time I’ll be in San Francisco and couldn’t have asked to play a better event for my first visit. I think the best part of this festival as well is the unity that will take place at this event. There are so many names on the line up that I’ve worked with directly, have booked myself, communicated on regular online, and/or close friends with already. This past year at SXSW it was a dream to be part of the crew that we were rolling around with and I feel this will be no different. At the end of the day we all are here to share the music but what makes this community so special is how closely networked and friendly everyone is. There so many people on here that are playing that I haven’t met in person and looking forward to finally giving a good amount of people some big hugs.  Can’t wait to kick it with all the homies out in Cali!

Now let’s list the two rounds of artist announced. I have bolded some of my recommendations for this. To be fair it’ll probably be quite bias to my personal taste and close friends of mine. Hey I was honest at least right?! Got to support the homies!

Level Attack | Sugarpill & Stephan Jacobs ft Naada

time December 3rd by Afro Monk authorTags: , , , , , , ,

Level Attack by Sugarpill and Stephan Jacobs featuring Naada is FINALLY due out on Addictech December 6th via Muti.

I don’t think there is any bigger release to date for 2010 that compares to this tune. The first time I met Sugarpill in person I drove up to Sarasota to catch his workshop. It took 3 hours to get there and you know what it was totally worth it because I got to met Evan in person obviously but I also got to hear Level Attack for the first time. We were driving over to the workshop and he pulls out his ipod and plays some tune and immediately I knew that it was an instant classic. The vocals by Naada are so clean and don’t take away from the beat. Everything about this tune is absolutely stunning. It’s easily my favorite track of ALL of 2010. EASY. There isn’t a time that I don’t get goosebumps every time I get to hear it dropped in one of the twos sets.

Hope to see this tune take my close friends to the next level. They definitely deserve it. Rumor has it they have a live version of this track in the works for shows together. You’ll definitely want to jump on that.

Along with the single expect banging remixes from other big names in the community including Ben Samples, Great Scott, Willy Whompa, & Chris B. Level Attack is due out in Addictech December 6th! You’ll def want this tune in your arsenal along with the remixes.

Project Aspect & Dj Rex | Artist Feature

time October 19th by Afro Monk authorTags: , , , , , , , , ,

There are two things when I think of Denver. The fact that smoking out there is decriminalized and the amount of music/talent out there in unbelievable.

Today I wanted to showcase two producers who probably don’t get enough exposure. Project Aspect & Dj Rex.

I’ve been playing out plenty of Project Aspect tunes for awhile now and since I’ve been backed up for awhile and figure give some spotlight on him. He recently just put out a new tune on his SC page and it’s banging. Be sure to keep an eye out on this guy and anyone for that matter part of DBS (Denver Bass Squadron).

Next up is Dj Rex. I had always seen his name around soundcloud but not till he submitted some tunes to my group did I realize how much I was sleeping on this guy. He has done some amazing remixes and reworks not to mention some fresh originals. He is another producer that deserves some respect but so easy to forget in the sea of talent in Denver.

Here are mixes from both of these Colorado boys. Both will take you on a thrill ride of dubstep & glitch-hop.

All this talk about Denver really has me thinking about finally visiting Denver. I’m sure ski season is about to start so be sure to check out where these guys are playing out in Denver if you going for a ski trip. I assure you that the mecca for glitch-hop right now is Denver/Boulder area. Yes, I said it not LA.

Off the top of my head some other Denver/Boulder producers/DJs that validate my statement that it’s the mecca: Pretty Lights, Vibesquad, Ben Samples, Greg Fisk, S.P.E.C.T.R.E, Jantsen, Willy Whompa, Omega, Unlimited Gravity, and many more… Much love to all the homies out there!

The 200th Post! Thank You

time July 29th by Afro Monk authorTags: , , , , , , , , , ,

This officially makes the 200th post for AfroMonk.com! I can’t believe it. It seems like it wasn’t long ago that I started this site.

I want to thank everyone who has ever been to my site and checked out any post. I want to give a MAJOR THANK YOU to all the producers out there that have actually answered my messages and e-mails. All of the people who send me their unreleased music and keep me up to date with all the latest tracks. If it wasn’t for you guys there wouldn’t be anything to write about. Keep doing what you love and making that sweet music.

It has been less than a year that Afromonk.com has gone live and it’s become one of the best projects I’ve ever done. I’m glad to have PBJ on board and have him part of the team. I plan to expand this site more in the near future and do a complete re-design. The next major project I’ll be embarking on is becoming a producer and starting a label. Lots of big news will come out of this week-end in Vegas.

I want to make a list of all the people who have helped me with this site. The ones who I love to help out and share their music with you. They’ve done nothing but hooked it up and be a friend and not just some other person online.

No particular order but this post is for you guys that I’ve met online!

Sugarpill, Shilo, Ben Samples, HipGnosis, Mochipet, Protohype, Mussck, Will Marshall, Great Scott, Richard Sweat, Lost in Bass, Freddy Todd, Pressha, Plus2, Willy Whompa, Stephan Jacobs, Kraddy, and all the others I’ve forgotten! Thank you!

You’ve all been a huge inspiration!
