Emissions: West Coast Bass Culture Festival 2014

time April 9th by Molly authorTags: , , , , , , , ,

Proud to present the Afro Monk press release on Emissions Festival 2014!

Emissions is one of our favorite festivals here at Afro Monk. Check out what Tara had to say about last year’s event here! AND We love Emission so much, we’re also giving out TWO free tickets! Check HERE for more information on the contest!

Camp ? has graced the West Coast with so many amazing parties and events over the years, not to mention five legendary Emissions and some seriously epic Burning Man camps. I am super grateful for what they have contributed to the community and love to support them in any way. Their brainchild, Emissions, is a one of a kind festival that I look forward to every year. It’s relatively small in number, keeping it quite intimate; it’s casual, yet well organized; and it’s high energy, heavy hitting array of bass music is unmatchable. The family vibe is strong, seen and felt in abundant smiles, laughs, and hugs; the music is fresh and poppin all day; and the PK rig, BANGIN, to say the least.

It is being held for it’s second year at the lovely Belden Town, an adorable mini town nestled in the Feather River Canyon in Northern California. Belden is an excellent host for festivals with it’s shady camping and flowing river.  The beach stage is an awesome space and I can’t wait be to kickin it there listening to bomb music in what’s sure to be gorgeous weather. Mmmm….perfection.

Emissions’ lineup this year has shaped up to be, in my opinion, their best ever. I love and admire Camp ?’s dedication to bass music. They’re not trying to be overly trendy or #toofuture4you, nor are they adhering to what seems to be the standardized festival lineup we have become oh too familiar with on the west coast. They’ve instead done what hardly anybody else has been able to really grasp thus far this summer and created, simply, a solid lineup of high quality producers and DJ’s that are killing it right now. Let’s look closer at some of those artists:

Doshy: Long before I became a writer for Afro Monk, I was an avid reader of the blog. JM (Afro Monk)’s posts introduced me to a ton of music in 2010-2011, but by far the best discovery I ever made from the blog was the introduction to bass music producer Doshy. Hailing from Germany, this is Doshy’s first ever U.S. appearance! This a huge deal to me, being a crazy fan of Doshy since JM’s article in 2011, and I was starting to think I would never catch him live in the U.S. I’m sure there’s a grip of other Doshy fans feeling the same way. Sure to be a highlight of the weekend.

Deltron 3030: A man who needs no introduction, Bay Area native, Deltron, is the perfect headliner for this event. The influence of hip hop on bass music is evident in the work of essentially everyone on this bill, so I think it’s definitely crucial to have such a prominent and incredible rapper headlining. His most recent album has a super fun, higher energy feel throughout so I’m sure his set will be super tight(of course I’m hoping he’ll play hella from Deltron 3030 though!)

NastyNasty: A bay area bass music scene legend and one of my favorite producers of all time, NastyNasty sets have been a consistently amazing part of my experience within the west coast electronic music scene for 4+ years now. A cultivator of science fiction influenced sound design and polyrythmic soulfuness, his unique take on bass music is always on that next level tip. His live sets are flawless and always a great time. Can’t wait for his set!

G Jones: Anyone who reads Afro Monk regularly is well versed in the work of G Jones. I consider him to be at the forefront of the West Coast bass music sound, killing it harder than pretty much anyone right now.  I love his music and am always impressed with new releases. His performance is sure to be one of the best of the weekends and you can catch him a second time alongside Minnesota.

Starkey + Dev79: What can I even say about Starkey?? His signature Street Bass sound defines everything I love about future bass music and his live sets have been some of the hardest I’ve danced in my life. I’m super stoked to see him alongside Dev79, who I have yet to see live. Unmissable for sure!

DJ Pound: Another proprietor of the “street bass” sound, DJ Pound is sure to be a seriously epic set. I’m really stoked on this booking and to get to catch some of DJ Pound’s monstrous tunes played by the creator himself on a PK system. Associated with some of the most forward thinking and respectable labels in the game, Seclusiasis and Saturate , DJ Pound has been making moves this last year and his music speaks for itself.

Perkulat0r: I was just recently introduced to the sounds of  Perkulat0r when he played a show in Seattle and I can assure you he’s not to be slept on. I would consider him to be one of the most exciting up and comers in the scene, rockin an already highly developed sound, reminiscent of the type of glitch hop I used to really love but don’t hear as much anymore. Don’t miss this one!

Quarry: Dark, dreary, beautiful Quarry. I frequently go through phases where I lean towards darker sounds and Quarry’s post-sad aesthetic fits in perfectly with my current obsession with that feel. I was stoked to see him on this lineup and can’t wait to get catch his set!

Some more artists I look forward to seeing are The Widdler, Bleep Bloop, Boats, Cestladore, J:Kenzo, Guttstar, Hypha, Smashletooth, The Pirate, Pressha, Intellitard, VNDMG, Yheti, Son of Kick, Bogl…realistically I could go on and on, as the talent is rich this year and the lineup is nothing short of stacked! And as usual, the Bay Area and Northern California are being represented in their fullest majestic form by everyone from the headliners to the local favorites. Big ups West Coast artists and everyone else coming through for the event. And huge ups to Camp ? on their epic choice in lineup.

This is sure to be one for the books! Tickets available now but selling fast! First and Second tier already sold out, so get on the third ASAP.  You can buy tickets here and follow the Emissions Event Page for information and updates on the event. And as mentioned before, don’t forget we are doing a contest for two tickets! This festival is not too be missed and entering only takes a sec! ENTER HERE!
Can’t wait to see everyone on the dancefloor!!

Emissions Festival | May 17-19, 2013

time April 25th by Taradactyl authorTags: , , , , , , , , , , , , , , ,

Emissions! I can’t contain myself with excitement for this all-around extraordinary festival. The vibes that you feel while at any Camp ? and/or Irie Cartel event are unparalleled. These guys are on the forefront of West Coast Bass Culture and they’re passionate about making it happen, and making it happen right! The crew welcomes any and all creative exploration, collaboration, participation, synchronization. So it’s no wonder that their gatherings are all-sensory interactive experiences.

My first Emissions was in 2011 in beautiful Tuolumne, CA… we came, we partied and howled at the moon, we got snowed out, and we conquered that shit. It was actually magnificent feeling the forces of nature make themselves known to us; it went from pleasantly sizzling hot to torrential blizzard in a matter of two days. But the point is, we came together under the snowfall and continued to have a blast! Not many groups of people can collectively do that. Then last year, Emissions was held in the sweeping valleys and timber-laden forest of Angels Camp. It was magical! There was a sense of pure bliss and beauty in the air that you couldn’t resist noticing and soaking in. This year, I can’t tell you how I’m excited that the gathering will be held in my all-time favorite venue of Belden Town, which is nestled in the stunning Feather River Canyon in the Sierra Nevadas. We’ll soon be shaking our booties in the sun, some floating in the refreshing water, some swaying in hammocks…. Perfection!

Let’s get to the music. DJ Shadow, at a festival?! Double yes. I can’t wait to see his All Basses Covered DJ Set; I feel that it will be completely different than when I last saw him in his awe-inspiring Shadowsphere. The Polish Ambassador always brightens my day with his retro sound that at times is reminiscent of old-school video game sounds. Lately he’s been exploring some lusher, earthy sounds that I love with Ecozoic. And there’s really no denying that he is the funkiest of diplomats with his bright onzies! We’ve got Ill.Gates, guaranteed to blow your mind with heavy bass frequencies. Minnesota will always be one of my favorites, I can never get enough of his textured tunes and his live performances are top-notch! I can’t wait to get weird in the paint with NastyNasty, his sets are always exciting and playful. G Jones has been killing it lately and I can’t wait to see what he brings to the table at Emissions. I am always brought to another dimension, one of elation, while experiencing Phutureprimitive live, so I am thrilled about his appearance on the bill. Other acts that I’m absolutely stoked on are M!NT (CO homie), Guttstar, Trevor Kelly (got the chance to kick it with him last weekend during Bicycle Day and had a great time and loved his sets),  Bedrockk (also CO homies), Psymbionic, MiHKAL, Hypha, Zapper & Datgirl, Smasheltooth, Foobz (also had the pleasure of chilling with him last weekend), Zebuel (friend and pioneer of the Tahoe bass scene here), Boggan (awesome friend from Reno), and Benito.

So what are you waiting for, grab your ticket and come join us in the woods for Emissions! It is an insanely reasonable gathering and you will return home a new person. Time to feel the music. Get your Emissions tickets here! See you there 🙂

Also, stay tuned for a ticket giveaway!

Lunacy Festival

time October 18th by Taradactyl authorTags: , , , , , ,

I can’t express how stoked I am for Lunacy Festival in eight days (October 26-28). It will be a collective dream! Before the lineup even came out I knew I was going to go, then when it did come out I jumped for joy! Lunacy will be a beautiful, well rounded weekend; not only is there amazing music, but also mind-blowing art, informative and interesting workshops, and magical spaces. You can’t possibly be bored or wondering what to do while at Lunacy! It’s held at the glorious Live Oak Campground just outside of Santa Barbara, where Lightning in a Bottle started out and where I went to Lucidity Festival last spring. It’s impossible to have a bad weekend there. I am imagining chillin’ in a hammock surrounded by thriving lush oak trees, with stunning souls all around me and jOBOT’s amazing voice serenading me… bring me there now! I can’t wait to open my senses and breathe in the beauty.

The lineup for Lunacy Festival is extraordinary and nicely varied. We’ve got the percussive, obscenely talented Eoto, ragers Vibesquad and An-Ten-Nae, and experimental “get weird in the paint” NastyNasty. Then there’s Random Rab who shares his soul with any crowd he performs for. I have been so into his music lately (check out the song Sunwater if you are wondering what I mean). Andreilien (Heyoka) will be bringing his circusy vibes, while Stephan Jacobs will be bringing his clean yet crunchy bass sound. I can’t get enough of Sugarpill’s deep and glitched out party sound; I’m so excited for that set (yes, even though I have seen him three times already this year)! Ill-esha will be crooning to us with that sexy voice of hers while playing some excellent beats. She played at a beach party on Tahoe last weekend and was absolutely phenomenal and a pleasure to be around. Russ Liquid will be creating beautiful tunes with his trumpet. Thriftworks is going to kill it with his stunning downtempo  melodies. I have never seen Digital Rust so I am incredibly stoked to see him play! I always enjoy ChrisB.’s sets and he is really fun to be around. Goldrush will be blessing our eardrums with textured frequencies. And there’s more! There is no doubt that it will be an incredible weekend of music.

I’m almost as psyched for the art as I am for the music. The turquoise portal that I got to chill in at Lightning in a Bottle and at Cognitive Awakening will be there. It’s an amazing chill zone for moments of relaxation; you are bound to meet someone interesting while in the portal! Kaleidoscopes Ultimate Reflections will be present, providing an eye-opening interactive journey through handmade stained glass kaleidoscopes. Bamboo DNA always brings the most intricate yet massive installation artwork…. I can’t wait to see what they bring to the table this time! I am also pretty curious about Lunatic Ping Pong, it looks very interesting. I LOVE interactive art! Did I also mention that I love climbable installations? The Otic Oasis is just calling my name; I can’t wait to explore it.

Don’t miss this festival! It is guaranteed to be an enlightening and soul strengthening experience! Get your tickets on the Lunacy website.

Splatter Festival | Failure

time October 11th by Taradactyl authorTags: , , , , , , ,

I think it’s obvious that I LOVE my music festivals. Any opportunity that I am given to remove myself from the routine of everyday life, you best believe I am going to take it up (hence why I have gone to 9 this year so far)! But have I ever had the opportunity to experience a festival that fuses music performances with paintball…? Not until I heard about Splatter Festival on October 19-21! Set in Oroville, CA, Splatter Festival is comprised of 3 days of music, camping, and paintball. There is a huge range assortment of music performers… from electronic DJs to jam bands to rappers, and everything in between. I am most excited to see Del the Funky Homosapien with a live band (very uncommon for a festy lineup), Dub FX (look this guy up on YouTube if you haven’t!), EPROM, NastyNasty, Love & Light, Kastle, Russ Liquid, Thriftworks, Nicoluminous, Zapper (live pa), Ratchet (live pa), and a bunch of friends from South Lake Tahoe. The lineup is pretty much insane! You have the option to play paintball for cheap while you’re there, too. How awesome is that? There will also be fire performances by some of my homies from the Tahoe Burn Tribe and a beer garden with reasonably priced beverages. Tickets are very reasonable for a 3-day campout, at $95 for the whole weekend or $50 for Saturday/Sunday. It will go up to $120 at the door so I would highly recommend purchasing in advance! I absolutely can’t wait to go rage with my bass fam and catch some live music while I’m at it! This will definitely be one for the books, kids! Check out the Splatter Website for tickets and more information.

This was by far the WORST organized festival I have ever attended. It was such a bummer, given the potential that the event had.

So, here’s what happened:
My friend Katie & I rolled up to the festival, excitement high, on Friday evening. Get to the gate – disorganized… The coordinator, Mike, didn’t even have a media list, but was “doing me a favor” by believing me in that we had discussed press passes for the event. Really, dude? We get to the parking lot and there’s an angry girl bitching at us about where to park when we were literally trying to find our bearings and get in to the festival. We find our homies’ camp and start walking around and enjoying ourselves. We catch the end of Thriftworks’ set which I’m stoked about. Excitement is high for Russ Liquid’s set. He comes on and is forced to play at such a low volume that the small crowd can barely even get down to it! Everyone’s yelling for him to turn it up so he tries to do so without notice, only to find that event coordinators keep coming onstage and telling him to turn it back down. At least his soothing trumpet sounds are heard loud and clear by all! Then Love & Light grace the stage. You all know that Love & Light sets are meant to be heard LOUD. However after ten minutes of their being onstage a girl takes the mic and announces that the whole festival has been shut down and that *hopefully* that night’s headliners will be playing the next day (which, of course, they didn’t). WTF! So everyone is forced to go back to their camps and do nothing. All renegade parties are shut down immediately. Then the next day everyone is forced to leave the beautiful festival grounds, and they are taking down the stages.
Apparently Mike, who put on the event, fled the festival right when all of this happened. He must have been embarrassed of his poor planning. I heard that the property owner called the cops on his own property because he wasn’t sure what he had been getting himself into, or something of that nature. I’m not even sure that artists were paid for their time and efforts to get to Splatter. THAT’S JUST WACK. My friend even told me that at the gate they asked him which 2 performances he was most excited for. When he asked why they were inquiring, they answered something like, “We want to know who to pay”. UHHHH, WHAT? Also, this isn’t the first time that Mike has completely fucked up a festival; he planned another potentially awesome festy in Soda Springs last fall and canceled last minute without notifying artists or attendees. Uhmm I see a pattern here? There has been major backlash on the guy, as attendees and artists alike have been voicing their anger at both paying for and not receiving payment for the event.

So promoters, please know what you’re doing if you are going to plan a large-scale event like this. There are so many intricacies involved in making such a festival successful and enjoyable for everyone involved. Use your resources, know what it takes to make it happen, and make yourself available when others need you. There has to be accountability in such situations. If not, you are guaranteed to be a failure and have a lot of people pissed of at you. That’s all, thanks for listening 🙂

NastyNasty | Artist Spotlight

time October 10th by John-Michael authorTags: , , , ,

NastyNasty aka Jasper is a BOSS. I’m one of the biggest fanboys of his music. The span of diversity in his music is incredible yet always has that signature NastyNasty texture.

He just posted up this professionally done video from What the Festival and it really showcases what Jasper is all about getting “weird in the paint”.

I highly recommend checking this guy out. I got to kick it with him a bunch over the summer at different festivals and he let me know that there will be a Frite Nite release and a Quitter release. He also gave me insight that he generally produces one new track a week. I’m dying to peak at his collection but something tells me we’ll be hearing a lot more from him soon.

He also put out a mix not too long ago called LAZERBRAIN. It’s a collection of unreleased material and man does it satisfy the weird receptors. I encourage you all to find his Twitter because he’s one of the coolest cats around.

Nothing but love out to you Jasper!
You are a true inspiration.

NastyNasty | Poison Flavored EP

time November 12th by John-Michael authorTags: , , , , , ,

NastyNasty aka Jasper has finally put a release date to his highly anticipated new Poison Flavored EP! I’m not going to lie and say that this is probably the best thing he has put out since The Reef. Jasper has been touring heavily in 2011 and yet still has time to put together one of the best EPs of the year.

This release contains some of my favorite songs that he plays. I can’t tell you how excited I was when a copy of Sweaty Bodies was in my possession. Sweaty Bodies is one of those tracks that I kid you not I listen to at least 5x a day (it’s unhealthy). Another track that I absolutely love that finally has an official release is Jelly. Every single song on this EP is incredible and completely approve. The moment I got a promo copy of this I put it in my phone and listened to it non-stop since it was the only release on my cell phone at the time. This most likely be one of my top 3 releases for all of 2011. Flawless.

Over the few years I’ve been part of this community I can’t help but say that Jasper is one of the best in the game. His dynamic range, unique style, and overall personality are unmatched. He’s one of those few people that can actually drop house music or juke and actually have me grooving (that’s huge). There are so many people who try to dip into a bit of everything but NastyNasty takes 1st prize for creating the best overall sound with every genre he takes a stab at. The best part about him is the fact that he’s actually one of the best people to chill with. Overall the guy is living life up and has a smile on his face. If you ever watch him play you can see NastyNasty come alive and pour out this explosive side to him. He has openly admitted that almost all the music he writes is about women which shows quite well. Jasper is just another guy like us who happens to make incredible music that has introduced him to a culture and scene that is quite unique. He’s the guy everyone loves and knows how to please any crowd he is given. Even today someone asked me what I recommend since nothing seems to really satisfy them lately and in that list NastyNasty was on the top of it. Be on the look out for another stunning release from Quitter (NastyNasty + So What).

I can’t tell you how honored I am to call him a friend. This summer I had the luxury of seeing him a whole bunch and feels good to know he’s a friend. Never will forget that moment he found me at Emissions and just gave me a hug and had no idea who it was at first but soon realized who it was. That’s when I knew that I had to be doing something right to get this mans respect.

NastyNasty – Poison Flavored EP
01: Sweaty Bodies
02: Jelly
03: Hyda
04: Legionnaire
05: Ghost Down

ill-esha | Elusive History & Reverie

time August 11th by John-Michael authorTags: , , , , , ,

ill-esha has become someone I dearly admire. I remember 3 years ago I was completely obsessed with her and dreamed of getting to meet her. My dream came true almost exactly a year ago when I brought her to Miami for my 25th birthday. It was between her and NastyNasty. As much as I love Jasper we wouldn’t have been able to have the time to hang out and Elysha was free the whole week-end, plus Jasper vs Elysha for a slip n slide party… LOL JK JK. I can say now that no matter what till my death bed I’ll be seeing/booking Elysha near my birthday. There aren’t words to describe how much she lived up to my expectations and more. I got the opportunity to spend a few days with her in Miami and enjoy beach life with her. Ever since then we have kept in touch and I’m always thrilled whenever we run into each other.

I’m proud to promote and push TWO of her most recent releases. Elusive History was put out first via Simplify Recordings and contains one of my favorite songs of 2011, Only Fair. I’ve been playing out the Gladkill version like no bodies business ever since I first heard it. Come on who wouldn’t fall in love with Elysha on vocals and Boris’ unique sullen sound. The next release just came out a few days ago, Reverie, which was released on Muti records! Reverie contains the epic track Pretty Banger which is self explanatory and an incredible track 33 and a Third with the talented MC Joey Mousepad!

I think you all get the point and should be familiar with ill-esha as I feature most of her work on here. Nothing but love to Elysha. I’m beyond excited to see her this upcoming week-end in Austin where she’ll be playing as well as Lorn! This will be the first time we’ll be officially playing together on the same bill =)

BUY: Reverie &/OR Elusive History

Emissions Festival | May 13th – 15th 2011

time April 19th by John-Michael authorTags: , , , , , , , , , , , ,

Emissions 2011

Camp Questions Mark & Irie Cartel present EMISSIONS! It’s not very often I post about events on the site but ohh man this ONE is truly worth covering. Emissions is on it’s 3rd year and wow this years line up is mind blowing. This festival is approximately two hours outside of San Francisco. There will be camping at the beautiful location for all three days.

Now lets get straight to the punch, MUSIC! The line up for this festival is one of the diverse line ups I have seen compared to all the major festivals. Diversity doesn’t mean that there’s only some medium grade level headliners mixed in with some local talent. This truly means that some of the biggest names in all spectrum’s of bass music. It is still taking me back how I will be playing at this event as well. This will be the first time I’ll be in San Francisco and couldn’t have asked to play a better event for my first visit. I think the best part of this festival as well is the unity that will take place at this event. There are so many names on the line up that I’ve worked with directly, have booked myself, communicated on regular online, and/or close friends with already. This past year at SXSW it was a dream to be part of the crew that we were rolling around with and I feel this will be no different. At the end of the day we all are here to share the music but what makes this community so special is how closely networked and friendly everyone is. There so many people on here that are playing that I haven’t met in person and looking forward to finally giving a good amount of people some big hugs.  Can’t wait to kick it with all the homies out in Cali!

Now let’s list the two rounds of artist announced. I have bolded some of my recommendations for this. To be fair it’ll probably be quite bias to my personal taste and close friends of mine. Hey I was honest at least right?! Got to support the homies!

Doshy!!! I don’t care what anyone says this guy is one of the baddest in the business. This guys beats are straight up some of the most original and unique tracks ever. I’ve been meaning to post his Remix EP for awhile now but been so backed up. Today he unleashed a FREE EP!!! Just when he treated us to a preview of the new NastyNasty EP on Robox Neotech, the label he runs. He bust out with this release

You would think I would be posting about Jasper’s new release but straight up this shit is way too ill. Every track is incredible! I’ve listened to this 3 times already. This might be one of my top 3 releases of 2011 already. I’m always blown away by his work and got excited reading his post about possibly giving away a few tunes but damn that was quick. Doshy, THANK YOU! Hook it up with a promo copy of the new NastyNasty =P

If you haven’t heard of Robox Neotech I feel bad for yah son! Their releases have some of the freshest wonky/glitchy/IDM out there. Their recent catalog is pretty much all I listen to in the car besides Elfkowitz & Gladkill.  Much Love the whole Robox Neotech family! I can’t thank you guys enough for the work and risk you put into pushing this sort of sound. Ok enough ass kissing but damn they deserve it and needs to be heard!!!
