Pressha | Everything in Moderation

time April 30th by John-Michael authorTags: , , , , ,

I consider Pressha one of the greatest strictly DJs out there in bass music today. The first party I ever planned and promoted Pressha played. Didn’t know much about him but my good friend Shilo assured me he was incredible. He showed up and totally blew me away. There aren’t many DJs who mainly only use Serato to play out and using Turntables that I enjoy. Ever since he came to Miami and crushed it for my WMC party we’ve kept in close contact. He really works hard and understands the importance of building a network and relationships in the music industry. There isn’t a line up in the NW that I’ve seen where it be a major event and not seen this man not playing at it. His network and ear for music is almost unmatched entirely but when talking solely DJ and not producing music there is no other I can think of besides Mihkal.

I’ve had the pleasure of kicking it with him out in Seattle and showed me around a bit during Decibel Festival. He’s a super chill dude who likes to party but also collects and plays dubs like it’s nobodies business. I know when I was focused more on putting out mixes that I had to beat Matt to the punch of releasing a mix because if not he’d probably be playing a lot of the stuff I’d be playing also. Now that I’m focusing less on playing out I’m glad that he’s still going strong and playing out and making a huge name for himself.

It has been awhile since we last kicked it but I’m really looking forward to getting to spend some time with him at Emissions this year. We’ll both be out there playing at it and if was still playing glitch-hop I’d probably have to check with him what he has planned because this guy always has the headie tracks that most don’t have access too. If you haven’t heard of this man and looking to become a DJ in this culture I highly recommend going back and looking to see the work he has put in. He’s the true model of what most DJs should be like…

NastyNasty | Special You

time November 10th by John-Michael authorTags: , , , ,

NastyNasty has put out a free two track EP for us all, Special You. They are two VIP versions of previous tracks he has done. These versions will give you a fresh take on tracks you probably already play out. I know it’s great to see another version of Better Off Alone because I’ve been playing his remix out like nobodies business. There times where I just play the original because don’t want to seem like my sets always include certain tracks and this is a perfect way to spicen it up a bit.

NastyNasty, right now my favorite producer and has been ever since I met him. Why? Well because the guy tells it how it is but with such a soft chill vibe. He’s stern but gentle. It was a honor to finally meet him and shake his hand. I had him booked for my birthday but things didn’t work out since he was so busy and rather have gotten some time to pick his brain and see what he really all about when comes to music. Jasper twittered not long ago saying “i didn’t get into music because i want to hang out and talk, i got into music because i love music.”At first I was like damn that’s a bold statement and was taken back at first but then realized you know what it’s true. We do this because we love music. If you get the time to chat and hang with a producer its a real special honor. Big ups to him for that chit chat in Seattle during Decibel Festival.

With all that said here is a serious message you all need to listen to. Jasper being so outspoken is amazing. I know I can’t keep my mouth shut sometimes like when I go off about Brostep and Dubstep but you know what speak your mind and Nasty tells it how it is… Much respect.

Why I don’t Listen to Your Music ( a primer for laptop slingers )

Ok so here’s the raw deal, broken down into bullet points.

I really do, it saddens me to see a generation of musicians that believe the gauge or value of their work is determined by the quantity of listeners. If the measure of ones work was valued on that basis Brittney Spears would trump Gershwin etc… etc... the point of music is not to impose it on others, it is to express yourself, Aside from that if you do build your career on spam you will have to keep doing it to sustain yourself. This is a shared sentiment among artists too, most of us see spam as an amateur move and will instantly turn off to the idea of listening to it.

So on your average week there’s about +/-16 hours worth of music shared with me via soundcloud/gmail/facebook/myspace/twitter etc… not to mention all the music going up on my favorite blogs and stuff sent to me via aim. so lets breakdown my average week

168 hours = hours in a week
– 56 hours = 8 hours a night sleep (if I’m lucky)

112 waking hours left
-36 travel to and from shows (this is a low estimate, this number can rival sleep some weeks)

76 waking hours left
-40 Making music, I try to spend at least 40 hours a week making music.

36 waking hours left
-14 eating, dudes gotta eat (i’d say 2 hours a day is a fair estimate for eating/preparing food)

22 waking hours left
-12, internet. also a low estimate…alot of booking/negotiation gets done on the internet, also a lot of time waste.

10 hours left
-3 making/enjoying coffee. i love coffee: if you get between me and coffee, you will lose an arm.

7 hours left to listen to music or do anything else i want

so generally i spend those 7 hours listening to the stuff i either get from labels i work with, friends of mine or Blogs i love which brings me to my next point:

and to top it off this is where you will actually grab my attention way quicker than a soundclound message or spamming one of my pages:

-Blogs are the internets magazines, in fact most print mags also show up in blog format-Most blogs also have a submissions box where you and countless other people can submit their music to someone who will not only give it a listen, but also has the power to do share it with the world if they enjoy it

-BLOGS ARE HOW INDEPENDENT ELECTRONIC MUSICIANS GET NOTICED, i made electronic music for years but it wasn’t until blogs like Manybrain, xlr8r, lowriders etc.. started blogging about me that i got enough attention to start traveling.

So yeah, I’m pretty sure this will offend some people but it is the honest truth from my end…i think if most people took the time they spent promoting themselves tirelessly and just put it into the tunes they’d be better for it.

NastyNasty | Lazer Soul Mix

time October 8th by John-Michael authorTags: , , , ,

This week’s Fire Friday Mix comes from one of my favorite producers, NastyNasty! Homie right now is dropping some serious tunes. You can completely feel the passion he has when listening to his work and seeing him play live. This mix has some serious soul to it. Jaspers tracks use vocals so well and doesn’t take away from the beats and production. Many of these tunes are inspired by love and heartbreak and damn does it hit home.

Be sure to pick up his latest release Puke Paint EP and look out for some of these tracks to be released via many labels. He’s really one of the most down to Earth guys in this music scene. It’s always a pleasure to run into him. NastyNasty may encompass his sultry sound but far from who he is as a person. Big ups!

Decibel Festival 7 Seattle 2010 | Afro Monk’s Picks!

time September 22nd by John-Michael authorTags: , , , , , ,

Decibel Festival 7

Decibel Festival is upon us today! I’ve put together my personal picks and where I hope to make it too this week. Unfortunately I won’t be getting into Seattle till Thursday night. After the Flying Lotus showcase was announced I had to buy an entirely new ticket since I was previously arriving on Friday night. I’m beyond words excited for the next couple of days! It’ll be my first time going to Decibel and Seattle. I met many Seattle residents when out to California for Lightning in a Bottle and can’t wait to link up with familiar faces across the States. The amount of talent in this festival will take you back. I see myself running around Seattle trying to catch as much as possible. Friday night is going to be complete madness!!!

I want to personally thank my buddy Pressha! He’ll be hosting me at his house. Much love to you for that and had to mention that since it’s a big deal to me. Thank you! Also much love out to Shilo from DanceFever5000, I know you put a list of events you chose and hope they are not the same exact one but do at the sametime, LOL. Big up to Bass Drop crew and all those out who are  in Seattle who made Decibel possible.

NastyNasty | Interview | Puke Paint EP

time September 10th by John-Michael authorTags: , , , , , ,

NastyNasty is one of the most respected artist in the glitch hop community. He’s an old timer and has inspired many along the years. September 14th, 2010 marks another big release from Jasper, Puke Paint EP on Frite Nite. He has been busy making tons of beats and during the Spring he worked on some new material after he returned from tour. This release seems to be coming straight from the heart. The EP literally bleeds emotions and screeching beautiful vocals glitched up make this one of his best releases since Knife Play in my eyes. Jasper describes it as “voices blasting forth colour into digital soundscapes”. I’ll never forget when I heard Sore Loser and ran to see which track it was. This release has tons of vocal expressions all over the place.

Much respect and love goes out to NastyNasty. I’ve heard nothing but amazing things about this cat. I was going to have him come into Miami for my birthday but things didn’t work out. Excited to get to see him live in Seattle for Decibel Festival and hear some of his new work on a big system. Eff all those haters Jasper, keep doing what you doing and know you’ve inspired many including me.

Jasper’s given permission to distribute one of the tracks off the EP, Newport. I happened to play it while at my Asheville gig and this track just slices through the crowd, masterpiece. Grab the free download, NastyNasty – Newport

2. Sore Loser
3. Toxenne
4. Newport
5. Bleeding

NastyNasty Interview

When did you start producing music at what age and what sort of medium
did you use at that time and how has it evolved into what you do
today? What other alias have you gone by?

I started producing music around age 19 making hip hop and jungle beats to rap on…i have pretty much come full circle except i no longer have the urge to rap. i have worked under the names Product, Hush…, Build128, Nails, Writhe and collaboratively with my friend So What as Quitter. i also have a few other aliases that i work under currently but the names are known to few for good reason…
Clearly you have lots of big releases to date but are there any that stick out to you the most while you were producing them and do youfeel a certain vibe when you create music?
In truth as of Right now NastyNasty only has 1 single, a beat tape/e.p. and a few remixes out right now However the e.p. I am about to drop on frite nite digital has got me quite excited. I have to feel something to be able to make music, I refuse to work if i am not inspired.

What do you currently use to preform? Is there anything you plan or wish to incorporate with your current setup?

Currently my setup is very basic, a Computer running abelton live 8 and an evolution x-session crossfader/dj controller. would like to incorporate either a triggerfinger or an lpd into the mix soonish.

Are there any interest you have besides music that totally captivate you? When you come home from tour or not working on music what is it in the world that makes you smile?

I’m totally obsessed with the science and the criminal mind…. More often than not i have episodes of NOVA or Gangland playing in the background while i work in the studio

Is there any place or city that you’d absolutely love to call your home or visit for a short time? Feel free to make a place up and describe it.

I’d really like to do some touring in europe, i think it’s kind of like a voyage to mecca for electronic artists.

Biggest influence, person you respect the most, and can call a friend in music?

My good friend and sometimes collaborator So What, he makes slap beats for days and is pretty much my pulse to the rap world…totally the kind of guy that reminds me why the word bitch really takes songs up a notch.

Who is your top musical influences that really hit you with emotion?

Man there are too many to name really…as cliche as it is to say aphex twin has always been a huge influence. Otis redding and sam cooke are constants, Danzig-Era Misfits are in heavy rotation….Astor Piazzolla…Lady GaGa… as far as “dudes in the scene right now” all my beat homies are doing really awesome things:

So What, EPROM, Starkey, Slugabed, Epcot, Salva, MiMOSA, Nit GriT, Lippe, Loops Haunt, Akira Kiteshi, Sduk, Hovatron, Dibia$e, Lazer Sword, Doshy, Shlomo

Best of luck to you with your career!

Afro Monk’s Adventures! California & Boston!

time June 23rd by John-Michael authorTags: , , , , , ,

I unfortunately haven’t made any post in quite some time. I wanted to write a piece about my recent travels in the past month. I’ve recently gone to California and Massachusetts for music. I can’t tell you enough how important it is to travel. Many of you just know me as someone who blogs on here and plays music. Truth is I’m quite co-dependent person and too in touch with my emotions at times. My trip to California was a huge risk for me.  I was going entirely on my own to Lightning in a Bottle. I had never been camping nor on a trip completely solo. Fortunately for me I’ve done quite a bit of networking online and was able to meet up with tons of amazing people. Traveling is important because it forces you to meet new people, live in unfamiliar environments, and show you thing you’ve might never have seen in your life. The world is too large not to be explored.

I came back from California a new man and with a mission, travel more! The best way I thought to myself to travel was to play shows in different cities. I already had planned a trip to Boston to go see CocoRosie live. Lost in Bass is a crew located in Boston which throws large events. They actually have a show on as well so I’ve communicated a bit with them in the chat room. They welcomed me in to play a gig with them with open arms along with a friend I met over WMC, JSB.  Boston completely opened my eyes even more to how close knit the electronic music scene is. Everyone I met in Boston would go out of the way for me, welcome me, and treated me as I was one of them living in Boston. The venue that I played at was one of the most amazing things I’ve ever been too. There was something in every corner that blew me away. Ultimately it is a giant loft where there any many residents that have their own space but all share it as common ground. I can’t tell you how many talented people I met up there. CocoRosie blew my mind and gave such a heartfelt one to one concert for everyone there.

Once I arrived to the venue to play it had already had a few people hanging out playing music. The event was a private party to help raise some money for a project they are all working on, Lowres.  I was a bit worried the party wouldn’t do well because there was no major promotion. There was a FB invite but it was private and very exclusive. There must have been 100 confirmed only and a fourth of people actually show up based on the confirmed number I’ve concluded in Miami. I was completely disproved tons of people were in and out of the venue. The most touching part of it all was how unified everyone was. There were kids who were all into the dubstep, uk funky, psy trance, drum and bass, and glitch. There were no clicks it was just everyone having a good time. I was introduced to so many people and wish I could remember them all, especially all the women. I can’t deny that every girl I met had the best personality and were totally great to talk too which I don’t often feel here. (Totally regret not getting this one girls number who spoke Spanish to me, LOL)

All in all this post is to show a small glimpse into our scene, the electronic dance music community. California you met my every expectation and met tons of amazing people. I have been to Boston tons of times to visit friends but this time I went on my own and met up with people I knew from online and it was night and day. Boston the underground community you have in the Glitch Loft is truly one of the most unique experiences I’ve ever had. I was blessed to get to travel to these two locations and party with some of the most hospitable people in this community. I’m doing my best to link up with people from all over the US to go play and get to experience something new. I have no problem flying myself out to play and spend a week-end in a city I’ve never been. Right now I’m scheduled to play Las Vegas NV, Buffalo NY, and Asheville NC.  I’m almost planning on going to Seattle for Decibel Festival. Majority of the people I hung out with in California at Lightning in a Bottle were from Seattle. I can’t wait to meet up with these lovely people again.

Point of the entry, TRAVEL! Open your eyes to what the world has to offer. There are so many people out there who are into this music as well and sometimes you’ve got to explore to find them even if it means hopping on a plane.

Much love to all the people who do it for the music and not a check.
If you organize events, know promoters, or have friends who are involved link up with me.
I’m looking to jump on any chance to go play out and meet some new people.
Contact me:

Much Love,

Glitch FM – Featured Djs – Sugarpill & .Spec

time September 27th by John-Michael authorTags: , , , , , ,

The past two month or so I’ve sort of moved on a bit from Dubstep. Don’t get me wrong I love the music but I wanted something new and fresh. It almost seems like the dubstep bug is fading in me. I’ve always known about Glitch but never really followed it more than the typical artist like The Glitch Mob. After digging a bit deeper into Glitch and what it has to offer I fell in love with the Glitch Hop sound. It’s exotic yet so familiar.

After finding out all the latest and biggest stars in Glitch Hop I wanted more. I found Glitch FM recently and haven’t looked back. This community of people running Glitch FM is the real deal. They have been extremely friendly and open. Recently have been trying to get invovled and push this further. It’s hard when the Glitch Hop movement is predominately in the East Coast but I hope to change that with time. I’ve recently talked to many people active in the Glitch FM community. I’ve had small discussions with two of the DJs that have a weekly on the show, Sugarpill & .Spec.

The first night I ended up tuning into Glitch FM it so happened to be right during a live radio show done by Sugarpill. The mix was heavy and just piled high with exclusives and unreleased tracks. I’ll never forget that set and specific tracks in the set. Later found out during the set that Sugarpill use to live in FL but recently relocated to CA. Mentioned was in Miami and BAMMM one of Otto’s tracks comes on. Great to hear a FL DJ represent! Looking forward to tuning into his next set on Thursday night. Here is a mix I’ve uploaded… If you haven’t heard much Glitch Hop this is a great introduction. This mix is a big inspiration for me and what I want to do. Don’t sleep on this mix because its BIGGG! Check out Sugarpill online.

Sugarpill’s Whompsticle Mix!

Another DJ I met was .Spec online. I didn’t get to catch his set live but did chat with him for a bit. He even gave me some DJ tips and real cool guy. He’s over there in Seattle for Decibel Festival. Talked about some of the different styles of mixing and DJs out there. Overall real good insight into somethings. I checked out some of his mixes online that he provided me with. Even jamming to one of them as I type this up. Definitely digging his style and no crazy bass just solid tracks blended perfectly together. You can catch his show on Saturday nights. You can also pick up some of his mixes on his site .Spec907

Check out .Spec’s Rev4.2.1 Galatea Mix

I’ve recently discussed starting a night of just glitch here in Miami. It’s a bit of a long shot but would love to be part of something new here in Miami. This is such a large metropolitan city and if I’m in it right now, there is no reason to start something that would invovled with music. I’m a huge believer that this style of music could be extremely welcomed here and no reason to be West Coast exclusive. For now I’ll just keep practicing and hope to improve my skills to maybe even spin some of this music so people can hear it out. Got to bring something different to the table as a DJ so you are remembered as a good friend put it…
