Grassroots California Hats

time May 20th by Afro Monk authorTags: , , , , , ,

Grassroots California is a small indie company that sells custom hats. They have been gaining popularity in the underground bass community as they have a strong presence at music festivals. If you’re into festivals such as Wakarusa, Nocturnal, Emissions, SXSW, WMC, etc… you’ve probably seen quite a few of these hats.

I’m a huge supporter of the company as they help bring light to many artist and sports teams. They are well known for spoof hats for many popular teams. They have a special music line that features big names like Pretty Lights, Lotus, Big Gigantic, Fresh2Death, and many more. I personally sport the Miami Dubphins hat. I’ll be adding quite a few to my collection in the near future and have even been in talks with them for special Afro Monk hat for 2012.

Be sure to check out their website that features not only hats but accessories, t-shirts, pins, and more. Also if you’re out at any of the music festivals you’ll probably see a vending booth. Be sure to know your hat size before you head over there. I promise you that you’ll be wanting to buy at least a few and chances are they might be limited to a certain size since they’ve been gaining such popularity.

Also be on the look out for the possibility of a Grassroots record label…
Much respect and love goes out to the Grassroots California crew!

Deadmau5 | Automated Sets?!

time May 5th by Afro Monk authorTags: , , , , ,

I just want sent over an article going into detail how Disney has bought out Deadmau5. They have tied it to how Disney has been making moves like this to acquire new appeal and trademarks.

Lets put this black and white. Disney now owns the trademark and logo of Deadmau5. WHAT?! I’m not a fan of his music but every festival and popular ‘rave’ is infested with tons of Deadmau5 gear and shirts. Hell at Nocturnal there was a dude who built his own Deadmau5 head and was taking pictures with people and letting them wear it.

The main reason I bring this all up is simple. The article quotes a former employer of Deadmau5 saying things that blew my mind and doesn’t surprise me. People pay attention to this!!!

“…makes perfect sense. Deadmau5′s live show is completely automated, so they can literally put the helmet on anyone, and nothing will change. Even the music creation process requires almost no human input, and if anyone can operate a one trick pony, it’s Disney.”

Do you have any idea what this means?! His sets are AUTOMATED!!! This is possibly the most disgusting thing I’ve heard. It truly gives a bad to a lot of electronic performers. This only gives more ammo to those vinyl and cdj purist who say people playing live is cheating. It really upsets me hearing this.

There is nothing more annoying for me to see djs or performers taking a cheap route when playing in Ableton or any live setting. Technology is here to move past beat matching and incorporate live remixing and edits NOT automation.

UPDATE:

Well turns out this is totally a spoof article i read. Unfortunately I trusted my co-worker who linked me to the site and didn’t dig deeper into it because it annoyed me so much and were on the way out to lunch. THIS IS NOT REAL!!!

Regardless if this information is fake the point of the post was about people who do this and give laptop DJs a bad name. We all don’t do this despite it being completely possible. I’m sorry it has taken me so long to update this but I was out for lunch drinking margaritas, HAPPY CINCO DE MAYO!

Pantyraid | Superior EP

time April 26th by Afro Monk authorTags: , , , , , , , ,

I’ll never forget the first time I heard PantyRaid, it was the mix for The Sauce. I even remember the post and saying The Sauce would be the best album of of the year. I still stand by those words and the dynamic duo of MartyParty & Ooah despite this follow up EP and uproar it has started.

What’s the cause of all this uproar? Easy. The new Superior EP is filled with heavy aggressive drumstep vibes. The fans of the duo are disappointed and I even have seen many people even calling them sell outs to the brostep movement. Marty and Ooah have gained the respects of many of the west coast crunk bass movement and lets just say most of them won’t stand for this change of direction. The Sauce was a major point of the crunk sound development.

It’s not that ohh no another brostep/drumstep EP its more about what people have come to expect from both of them. We all know how talented and musical they both can be. Hell go listen to Marty’s Skukuza EP or Ooah’s Of Porclain project. The production value of those versus this is quite astounding. Now lets not burn these guys at the stake they have the right to change direction and have fun. They aren’t sell outs because as the powerhouse Skrillex has said numerous times.

My biggest concern is how they are handling this as if to pull a big move to almost disregard and hide all the negative responses. Marty posted this on FB and I replied. It of course got deleted but WHY?! I’m here to support but also speak my mind.

MartyParty:
“You gotta love the hate on Facebook – WOW! Full time job deleting evil postings – to all those people that hate on art – LOVE and HATE are the same emotion – check yourselves and open your minds – I LOVE MY LIFE!!!!”

My response:

“I’ll be honest I’m not a fan of the new material but it’s definitely something interesting to listen to coming from two extremely talented producers. I wouldn’t call Love & Hate the same emotion. I personally think this album if anything shows the dark side of ones emotions where it has heavy aggressive angry monotones all over it but don’t we all have that inside at one point of time. Have fun but realize the new sound pushes a completely different emotion than The Sauce so what did you expect? Keep making that music and enjoying yourself. Do it for you and no one else but remember the art of music is conveying you and emotions. You guys do it well. Big ups!”

Now checking Twitter I see this.
Marty: “#3 on iTunes – THANKYOU – when we made these songs in the Brooklyn studio we knew they would stir up some emotion out there”

If you knew this was going to happen stop trying to delete and erase all the people speaking their mind and giving their opinion. Hateful messages yeah sure get rid of them but something tells me all of them aren’t hateful or evil. Everyone has their own personal opinion and doesn’t mean everyone thinks they have to follow or feel the same way. Hell if it has hit #3 on iTunes already you got a positive response but don’t be surprised if on social media mediums your fans who have been following you and actually pay attention to you won’t react in a positive light and be ignored.

Personally I think this is a huge push for people discovering The Sauce if they haven’t already. Look what The Glitch Mob did and it was in the complete opposite direction. They followed up all their free bootlegs with a straight downtempo chill LP versus a heavy crunk glitch release everyone expected. There were people who hated it and talked trash but want to talk about the press monster that came out of it. The same is about to happen with this release from Pantyraid.

I might not be a producer and making beats all the time but I know that music is a powerful medium of expression. There is music to rock out and party with and then there’s the listening to music. That’s how I mainly divide a lot of my music lately. This Superior EP is jump up and rage at a club and they execute it well. There is no doubt in my mind that heavy energy is the name of the game right now. Just remember to keep the diversity. Pantyraid shows us that you can get all sexy and crunk but also get all that pent up energy and push out some fun jump up dance floor stuff.

Love it or hate it check out the Superior EP @ PantyRaid Music

Emissions Festival | May 13th – 15th 2011

time April 19th by Afro Monk authorTags: , , , , , , , , , , , ,

Emissions 2011

Camp Questions Mark & Irie Cartel present EMISSIONS! It’s not very often I post about events on the site but ohh man this ONE is truly worth covering. Emissions is on it’s 3rd year and wow this years line up is mind blowing. This festival is approximately two hours outside of San Francisco. There will be camping at the beautiful location for all three days.

Now lets get straight to the punch, MUSIC! The line up for this festival is one of the diverse line ups I have seen compared to all the major festivals. Diversity doesn’t mean that there’s only some medium grade level headliners mixed in with some local talent. This truly means that some of the biggest names in all spectrum’s of bass music. It is still taking me back how I will be playing at this event as well. This will be the first time I’ll be in San Francisco and couldn’t have asked to play a better event for my first visit. I think the best part of this festival as well is the unity that will take place at this event. There are so many names on the line up that I’ve worked with directly, have booked myself, communicated on regular online, and/or close friends with already. This past year at SXSW it was a dream to be part of the crew that we were rolling around with and I feel this will be no different. At the end of the day we all are here to share the music but what makes this community so special is how closely networked and friendly everyone is. There so many people on here that are playing that I haven’t met in person and looking forward to finally giving a good amount of people some big hugs.  Can’t wait to kick it with all the homies out in Cali!

Now let’s list the two rounds of artist announced. I have bolded some of my recommendations for this. To be fair it’ll probably be quite bias to my personal taste and close friends of mine. Hey I was honest at least right?! Got to support the homies!

Asa | Interview | Artist Spotlight

time April 12th by Afro Monk authorTags: , , , , , , , , ,

Asa recently posted that he was looking for some blog support on an interview done over at the Greek Dubstepforum. I gave it a quick read and decided that I’d help him out. If you follow me on Facebook or some of my rants on this site I’m sure you’ll see why I agreed to this. It seems like the movement and attitude is spreading. Let’s not forget to mention genuinely being embraced by everyone with a free mind. This dude has a lot of passion behind what he says and isn’t afraid to speak his mind despite knowing it’s going against the ‘norm’. This is one of the reason I’m building a label right now. There aren’t enough outlets and places to get things like this pushed. That traditional dubstep sound is dying but that’s ok as long as it keeps evolving. The idea of 140bpm and heavy bass isn’t a formula to live by in dubstep. Hell if it was up to me forget about the bass lines and just fill it in with more melodic synth lines.

Here is the interview!

So who are you ?

My name is Asa, that is my birth name as well as my ‘alias’ or whatever you want to call it. I am a producer/songwriter from the UK, i am based in a small city on the south coast of the country, about half way between London and Bristol.

When did you started with producing and where does your style derive from?

I started ‘producing’ back in school, when i was about 15, i guess? but of course it was nothing serious, at the time my musical background was in choirs and i played piano – which has definitely contributed towards the way i write a lot of my music now. But in all honesty I’d say my production derives primarily from being sick and tired of hearing so many generic artists, i just wanted to hear something different. I make tunes for myself mostly, it’s like therapy, ya know? its personal and it’s intimate, well it’s intimate until it’s released anyway. then it’s the listeners property, which is the way it should be. For me, it just has to evoke an emotion in the listener, wherever that be on headphones in a dark room by themselves or it be on a huge sound system amongst thousands of other people – it’s got to induce some sort of emotional response. that’s the purpose of music, right? otherwise there is no point. In terms of dance music, I grew up listening to mostly garage, just a lot of 2-step and some dnb really, amongst a lot of other music of course. Bands like Sigur Ros & Incubus amongst plenty of others have as much influence on me as my contemporary ‘dubstep’ producers. But that is definitely where a lot of my rhythmic patterns stem from, for sure.  The Skippy 2-step drum patterns, i love them. I still find my garage collection to be the most varied and interesting music i have, obviously there is a lot of nostalgia involved with my relationship to the tunes, but garage did get killed off and recycled into dubstep and grime pretty much. That’s the way this music works, there is this continuum of bass music in the UK that just keeps churning out new ideas. hence why i get so frustrated with generic production traits – it’s the downfall of scene’s in the context of this music, you HAVE to do your own thing, and i think that principle is where my style derives from. I do my own thing.

What do you respond to the whole thing about dubstep and heavy bass. Is it just a trend?

Well it’s just the ridiculous amount of mid range lfo abuse i hear. I mean, i mostly only hear it when residents are playing that stuff before me at bookings. But don’t get me wrong, the producers I’m closest with like KOAN Sound, Statix & Culprate – they  make some of the hardest stuff around – but it’s so well executed, i get just as excited about a new Culprate tune as i do about a new Burial one, and that’s the way it should be i think. Good music is good music. But there definitely is a lot of poorly produced dubstep, i know that much. there is not enough space in the mix downs in most dubstep tunes now. No room for the sub frequencies to be the prominent focal point in the mix. Which was the only ‘rule’ in Dubstep in the first place, if you can even call it a rule. It had to be around 140bpm and have emphasis on sub bass, the rest was up to the producers individual creativity. That’s how it should be. Me and a few of my friends have all been writing music around 100bpm recently, after becoming somewhat disillusioned with what people think ‘dubstep’ is now, we have just reached a point where making music defined by one tempo just isn’t plausible. We don’t want to do that, as much as dubstep is and will continue to be the home for our music. There really has been a very notable divide in the scene over the last year or two; it’s clear to everyone involved on either side. A lot of people on one side hold a lot of animosity towards what is now commonly associated with the tag dubstep; as a result they are deliberately pushing further and further away from the cliché production techniques which is a positive creative drive for sure, but I for one am still more than happy for my music to be tagged as dubstep. I still think the best thing about the genre is its diversity, so if producers like me try and distance ourselves from dubstep, and then what hope does it have? Creating sub-genres is like pushing yourself into a corner, setting up more boundaries; it will only limit people’s creativity.

Your last release is ‘Sweeter Things EP” and let me tell you, we like it so much. whats next? are there unreleased or new tracks coming up?

Ahhh that’s awesome, i am glad you like the EP – i was a bit hesitant about it, i mean, it’s music i make for me and a few close friends to listen to and I know it’s not what most people are used to hearing. So it’s really good to know that some people have picked up on it and get the point of the tunes, that sort of thing is really cool. I really appreciate it whenever anyone tries to connect on a personal level and say that they like the tunes, that sort of thing really means the world to me. As for new releases myself & KOAN Sound just done a remix for Kito & Reija Lee’s EP on Mad Decent, which has been getting huge support and a great response recently which we are really happy with. Right now I have a whole bunch of remixes due for release – the list is so long i wouldn’t even know where to start. The same applies to collaborations, I’m still working with my core group of friends more than anyone, mostly KOAN Sound, but I’m now getting to work with some of my favorite artist’s, which is something i am really happy about. I apologize about being so vague and not mentioning artist’ names, but i have realized recently that it is good to keep such things under the radar until they are completely finished and on top of that I’m simply just not allowed to talk about things until certain dates etc. I write music all day, everyday. So there is no shortage of new music, it’s just an odd period for me and my friends at the moment – a lot of decisions being made with labels and all that kind of stuff, so a lot of our tunes are in a state of limbo at the moment.

Where do u see dubstep/step/future garage going? *just another trend like minimal techno

I really do not agree with the whole genre branding thing, as I’ve said. To me – ‘Future Garage’ is one of the most ridiculous tags i have ever come across. I could sit here for hours and moan about why i disagree with it, but it’s not worth it. i just don’t agree with it. It’s dubstep, don’t call it anything else. there is something in it for everyone – that has been the whole point of this music from day one, it was the main principle that attracted me to it, ya know? The scene is thriving, regardless. There is so much good music consistently being put out. that’s all that counts – it is not a ‘fad’ or ‘trend’. its just another part of this constantly evolving bass music continuum that we are so lucky to have in the UK. Creativity is thriving, the underground really is glowing…

What u know about Greek Dubstep in Greece in general and if u have any thoughts to play here?

I have a dear friend of mine who guys by the name of ‘Skru’, he goes by other alias’s also, but he is a great soul and has so much passion for the music. He has always supported my stuff since i started, but other than that i know very little about the scene in Greece. I hear about events occasionally from my friend, but that is about it. it is obviously a place i would love to come and play, meeting people and traveling is one of the best things about music – it is what I am most thankful for out of all of it. I hope i am lucky enough to have a Greek promoter want to book me someday!

Tell us some of your favorite source for sounds. VST plugin’s , DWA’s, hardware…

I don’t like to talk about production methods so much, for a lot of reasons really… I think sharing knowledge about production and such things is one of the most important things, no doubt. But i prefer to do it on a one to one basis – I would happily teach or show anyone how i go about putting this sort of music together if they were willing to just sit there and learn. Making tunes brings people together, the people I value the most in my life are the ones I have met through music. the whole networking side of it so important. Production tutorials and things like that seem to be a bit too ‘paint by numbers’ for me, it cuts of that human experience of writing music. The fun and the vibe you can get from working on music with someone who approaches it in a completely different way is one of the most exciting things for me. Sitting around with KOAN Sound and just working on tunes have been some of the most beneficial moments of my life. Do you know what I mean? i will say this though – i record all my own foley sounds, i have my own production palette. Well, i hope i do anyway..

“I made this for you” , i have to admit that was my first ‘contact’ with ur music, its one of my fav mix’s and i have the question if the title and the hole mix is ‘personal’ to you. maybe a girl ?

Well, i really don’t know if i should talk about these things… but it’s ok i guess. i mean, I am personally invested in it all for so many reasons. But they are not going to be the same reasons for the listeners, if that makes sense? I really don’t want to come across as pretentious. I just like making tunes, that all. so yeah, Essentially, a lot of the music i have made in the past was as a result of a very messy, break up from a long term relationship –a lot of it is about telling stories for me. It’s like therapy, it really is. That situation is well in the past now of course. so in regards to the mix entitled ‘I Made This For You’, it is in relation to another person… the key is in one of the first track names, that is all i will say. she knows who she is and that is all that matters

5 tracks I am into at the moment

Ed Sheeran – The A Team (KOAN Sound Remix)

Culprate, Tekka& Sticky Disco – Finger

Earl Sweatshirt – Earl

Joy Orbison – Sicko Cell

Asa – Sweeter Things (eleven8 Remix)

Stephan Jacobs | Emancipator Remix

time April 11th by Afro Monk authorTags: , , , , , ,

Stephan Jacobs is interesting in his fans to help him out a bit. He is getting ready a lot of shows ahead and his laptop is on verge of dying due to all the changes. After talking to him a bit he told me that as he is gearing up a whole new live setup with some new toys and now running solely WAVs instead of Mp3s and his laptop is starting to give up.

Stephan decided that he’d put some of his work hard work up for sale to help raise the money for a new laptop. He is selling some of his NI Massive patches that he has built. Any starting producer or even experienced one could get a lot of value out of this $15 package. This is a way to help a fellow musician out as well as gain some knowledge on what one of the rising stars has been doing.

Not only has he decided to sell this product he put together but he’s also giving away his Emancipator – When I Go remix as a sign of good faith. This track explodes and has such great depth to it.

Be sure to be on the look out for Stephan as he embarks on some exciting shows such as Coachella next week and Lightning in a Bottle at the end of May. I’m looking forward to catching up with him as it seems like awhile now. Also word on the street is he has been working closely with Love and Light on some tunes… Who knows what’s ahead with that… A collab EP, tour, etc… ? The world may never know but expect something…

Mono/Poly | Manifestations EP

time March 26th by Afro Monk authorTags: , , , ,

Mono/Poly brings up something special in his latest release, Manifestations. It’s an absolutely beautiful piece of work. Brainfeeder always seems to put out some of the greatest works. This whole release has a real fun feel good vibe to it. Mono/Poly was one of those producers who I knew the name but never got around to really spending time on. This EP totally blew me away and makes me realize how silly it was to not give this stuff my ear earlier.

The beats on all these tracks are unreal. They all have that unique wonky glitched up beats thrown in there. There are some tunes that are absolutely intense such as the tune Punch The Troll In The Neck. Complete madness yet works so well. The diversity and crazy beats that are on this release is something you should definitely check out. Don’t sleep on this like I regrettably have for too long. This comes out April 5th, 2011! Time to play some catch up!

2. Forest Dark

+verb | Solar Heat Traveler

time March 25th by Afro Monk authorTags: , , , , ,

One of my all time favorite producers out there, +verb, has a release coming out! This release is being put out by Vermin St a great group of people behind it. This is everything you’d want in a release and few unique remixes along for the ride. There are three original tracks by Dominic and another three quality remixes. JerkOFF shines on this release with a such beauty. Playing this song never gets old. Seriously. It’s an instant classic in my book. We’ve also just begun because the rest of the tracks only show off some of the freshest beats done by +verb. The three takes of Puddleglum add the perfect amount of spice to an already original tune. Just when you’ve fallen in love jerkOFF in comes Freddy Todd to bring some extra hype with perfectly well placed samples.

+verb has so much more ahead and this is the perfect place to start checking out his material if you haven’t already. You can be sure to hear more from +verb as he begins gearing up for possible tour dates in the future. I know I’m excited to finally catch this guy playing out. He also has a ton more release where this came from. Be sure to check out his soundcloud and hear some of the amazing work he does. Big up to Vermin St for releasing this one. Top quality. This is officially due out this upcoming Tuesday! Be sure to pick this one up!

ill-esha | Only Fair | Kickstart Video Fund!

time March 21st by Afro Monk authorTags: , , , , ,

ill-esha is working on possibly making a music video for her track, Only Fair. She had decided to launch a kickstart campaign to help fund the project. The bar is set to $3,000 and it needs YOUR help! The video above goes into detail what she is hoping to accomplish with this video. We all know it’s a hard time to produce top quality products and with the decrease in album sales and labels lacking the budget this is her way of giving back a piece of herself in this video.

There are many benefits to contributing to this project based on how much you donate. What many of you don’t realize is that if the project does not hit its goal you will be refunded however much you have donated. Please spread this project as much as you can as I know that if there is anyone who has put in the time and effort into the community it’s Elysha.

I spent the past couple of days with her and every moment my faith is restored in where the music is going and seeing a loving heart behind the music. There’s so much music out there and seems to lack soul and seeing her preform and being around her you can just feel it. I hope you can give a little to this project and see it manifest itself into reality. Once the song is released all the profits made from commercial sales will be donated to the emergency relief effort in Japan.

Lightning in a Bottle 2011 Line Up

time March 7th by Afro Monk authorTags: , , , ,

The Do Lab presented us with their LIB 2011 line up upon us!
May 27th through May 30th will mark the festivities this year!
I’ve been looking forward to see what this year might bring and boy is it sweet.
The diversity of this line up is sexy.

This time there are so many familiar names that I have no idea what to do!
I was in NYC with Gladkill when I saw this and wow! We both freaked out and had our mouths on the floor. Instead of posting the image with the line up I’ve decided to break it down by day and bold my suggestions. Expect Glitch.fm & Bwomp to be forming another camp this year! I’ll be somewhere running around in a complete daze. I can’t wait to go back to California for this one. The community and love out there is unmatched at these festivals. This festival is the one thing that totally shifted everything in the right direction for me in 2010 and know that it will do the same in 2011. I’m going to say that I highly suggest getting tickets for this now! I have no idea if this event can sell out but something tells me if it’s possible it will. Grab your tickets and make travel plans because this is the one festival not to miss out on!
